Francis Gurry on the impact of new gTLDs

World IP Day 2014 to focus on movies

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry discussed various challenges posed to trade mark protection by the proliferation of new gTLDs earlier this month.   The theme of this year’s World IP Day, which takes place on 26th April, is Movies: A Global Passion.

He was speaking at the unveiling of WIPO’s 2013 statistics on UDRP cases, which showed a 10% fall in the number of cases brought but a 22% rise in the number of domain names.

The first of more than 1000 new gTLDs have already been launched, and there have already been some trade mark disputes.

“Trademark owners have been facing significant uncertainty in the expansion of the Domain Name System (DNS) while at the same time working with reduced protection budgets,” said Francis Gurry. “The proliferation of potential web addresses, with the expected roll-out of 1,400 new gTLDs, will force trade mark owners to adjust their priorities in terms of registration and protection choices,” he added.
