The objective of the side-event, which was held at the WIPO headquarters, was to present the state of the art of the oriGIn project of an online compilation of all geographical indications (GIs) protected in the world.
The compilation will list the protected GIs with the indication of the country of origin, category of product, type of legal protection (sui generis, legislative act, court ruling, collective/certification mark, etc) and third countries where the GIs are protected via bilateral or plurilateral agreements.
Difficulties outlined
Alessandro outlined the existing difficulties for brand owners and IP professionals in accessing information about GIs and showed how these difficulties may have an impact on clearance of new brands, trade mark monitoring and due diligence exercises in projects of cooperation between trade marks and GIs.
The oriGIn compilation, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, will be available to the public.
The GI Team will continue to follow this interesting project and will inform the MARQUES community as soon as the GI compilation is operative.
Worldwide Symposium
MARQUES has also been invited to attend the next Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications, organised jointly by WIPO and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (SAIC). This takes place in Yanzhou, Jiangsu Province, China from 29th June to 1st July 2017.
Alessandro will represent MARQUES at the Symposium, which will look at topics including the socio-economics of GIs, management of GIs, branding strategies for origin-based products and the Madrid and Lisbon systems, as well as specific local, regional and international issues.
