Record year for EUTM applications
There were 146,418 EUTM applications in 2017, the highest number ever and an increase of 8% on 2016, according to EUIPO statistics
The data also shows that 53% of applications were for word marks and 46% for figurative marks. All other types of mark made up less than 0.5% of applications. The total of 146,418 includes 119 collective marks and 58 certification marks, which became available for the first time in 2017. Germany remained the number one country for applications (21,915), followed by the US (16,661), with China rising to third place (12,193). The EUIPO statistics include information on trends in opposition, cancellation and registration as well as applications. Early signs suggest that applications will grow again this year: in January 2018 there were 12,106 applications – an increase of 22% on the same period last year.
