The Lewis Gaze Memorial Scholarship established in 1997 in memorial to the first Chairman and President of MARQUES.
Established in 1997 as a memorial to the first
Chairman and President of MARQUES, the annual Lewis Gaze Memorial
Scholarship seeks to reward academic achievement in the field of trade
mark law.
Each year, entries are invited from students attending university in the
country in which the Annual Conference is to be held. The students will
have taken relevant undergraduate or postgraduate courses in a
recognised college or university nominated by the MARQUES Council.
Following acceptance of the nomination by the Head of the Faculty at the
university concerned, invitations are extended to students to submit
entries in the form of extended essays/dissertations of at least 10,000
words.
The university itself conducts an initial assessment of all entries
received. It submits all the entries, together with recommendations for
the award of Scholarships, to the MARQUES Council.
After moderating the entries and considering the university’s
recommendations, the MARQUES Council awards up to three prizes.
All award winners are invited to attend the full professional programme
of the current year's Annual Conference, as guests of MARQUES. The
entrant awarded first prize is also invited as a guest of Marques to the
forthcoming year’s Annual Conference. The presentation of the Award
takes place in front of the international gathering of Conference
delegates during the programme.
