Halloumi registered as PDO
On 12 April, the European Commission registered Χαλλούμι/Halloumi/Hellim as a protected designation of origin (PDO)
The registration allows producers of the iconic Cypriot cheese based anywhere on Cyprus to benefit from PDO status. To help producers in the Turkish Cypriot community benefit from the protection, the Commission also adopted a measure allowing the PDO product to cross the Green Line, provided that the cheese and milk from which it was made has met all EU animal and public health standards. The full details of the package of measures are set out in an announcement by the European Commission. It marks the culmination of many years of discussions regarding the protection of Halloumi. The Foundation for the Protection of the Traditional Cheese named Halloumi has initiated several trade mark cases based on its EU collective mark, including against BBQLOUMI and GRILLOUMI, in recent years.
