Madrid international applications fell by 0.6% to 63,800 in 2020, according to WIPO's Madrid Yearly Review, published earlier this month

However, the number of designations in international applications increased by 2.1% and the total number of active international registrations increased by 4%. Notable developments during 2020 included the accession of Trinidad and Tobago to the Madrid Protocol. Applicants from the USA, Germany and China were the biggest users of the system in 2020, with the top filers being Novartis AG, Huawei Technologies and Shiseido Company.
