TM5 and ID5 meet in Brussels

EUIPO hosted the annual meetings of the five biggest trade mark and design offices at the end of October

The hybrid meetings were attended by representatives of EUIPO, USPTO, KIPO, JPO and CNIPA as well as by WIPO Director General Daren Tang. WIPO is a regular observer at the meetings.

The meetings marked the 10th anniversary of the TM5. According to EUIPO: "Christian Archambeau, Executive Director of the EUIPO, presented a joint vision statement for the five offices that builds on the achievements of the collaboration and sets out a reaffirmed and stronger mandate to work towards interoperable and adaptable trade mark systems that will evolve with the changing IP landscape and emerging technologies." He highlighted the importance of cooperation between offices, opportunities for harmonised and improved trade mark procedures and new technological solutions, such as those based on AI.

The ID5 meeting made progress on exchanges on new technologies, such as digital designs and the metaverse. The ID5 partners adopted a joint statement that focused on adaptable and interoperable design systems concentrating on emerging technologies, and broader cooperation with a wide group of users.

The forums also held dedicated user meetings.

KIPO will serve as secretariat and host of the 2023 TM5 and ID5 meetings.
