WIPI

The WIPI records IP filings made in 2021, based on figures compiled from IP offices. It found that IP applications in all areas reached record highs, driven by growth in Asia.

The total trade mark class count worldwide was 18.1 million, up 5.5% on 2020. This comprised 13.9 million trade mark applications. Trade mark filing activity grew in 18 of the top 20 offices. The UK led the growth, with an increase of 61.8%, while China’s IP office had the highest total volume of filing activity with a class count of 9.5 million.

Industrial design filing rose by 9.2% to 1.5 million designs in 2021 (with 1.2 million design applications). China’s IP office received applications covering 805,710 designs during the year, or 53.2% of the world total.

Traditional knowledge

WIPO has launched Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge Language Packs containing short and practical print and audio information resources aimed at indigenous and local community entrepreneurs.

They are currently available in 14 languages, and further languages may be added.

Green Technology Book 2022

WIPO has launched the first edition of the Green Technology Book, which focuses on climate-change adaptation. It is created in cooperation with the partners Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) and the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASTR) and was released at COP27 in Egypt.

Paraguay joins IP treaties

Paraguay has joined the Nairobi Treaty protecting the Olympic symbol against unauthorised use for commercial purposes and the Vienna Agreement on international classification of the figurative elements of marks.
