Mark-it: News from the UK IPO's Trade Marks Registry
Over the last year, the trade mark registration process at the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) has changed considerably. In October 2007 the ex-officio refusal on relative grounds was abolished. A fast track examination service was introduced in April 2008 and from October 2008 the opposition period will be reduced from three to two months.
A good reason for the UK IPO to "reflect on the success of these new initiatives introduced over the past year" in its new newsletter "Mark-it: News from the UK IPO's Trade Marks Registry". In the September 2008 issue of Mark-it the UK IPO discusses a "year of marked change", explains how the recent changes lead to "More control given to trade mark owners and applicants" and illustrates how the "Opposition rate for 2008 [was] lower than anticipated". The newsletter also shows how "International applications [remained] unaffected by legislativbe change".
The newsletter is available via the UK IPO's website and can be retrieved by clicking here (PDF).
