Greece - more than 100.000 packs of counterfeit cigarettes seized in warehouse just outside of Athens
Greek Skai reports that YPEE, the Greek Special Control
Service, a unit of the Greek Ministry of Finance, charged with the
investigation of fiscal crimes, has seized more than 100.000 packs of
counterfeit cigarettes, after raiding a warehouse in Acharnai, at the suburbs
of Athens. Also, YPEE found handwritten notes and “books” bearing records of
illegal transactions of counterfeit cigarettes. Based on the said evidence, YPEE estimates
that the group running the illegal operation have sold approximately 3
million packs of counterfeit cigarettes in
the last 16 months. This means roughly 9 million euros in lost state re venue
form taxes and tariffs.
As the criminal investigation is on-going no further
information was released. Still, just to give readers of the blog an idea of
the case, YPEE also announced that it found and confiscated a shotgun(!) and 55 bullets in the said warehouse.This is probably a different version of a 'smoking gun'.
