Greece - blow against counterfeiters in downtown Athens
Greek financial newspaper Naftemporiki reports of an apparently major success of Greek anti-counterfeiting authorities. According to the information published, under the instructions of a public prosecutor, a joint raid by the Greek police, Athens municipal police and YPEE, the Ministry of Finance's fiscal crime unit, took place yesterday morning in downtown Athens. The authorities uncovered a large warehouse stocked with, allegedly, thousands of counterfeit products, which were of course confiscated. It appears that the counterfeiters were extremely well-organized: the warehouse had a camera surveillance system, both inside and outside, as well as hidden gateways leading to a basement warehouse in the next building! This hospitable counterfeit warehouse is estimated to be about 2.000 sq.meters (not bad!) and the authorities said it would take them three days to pen down the counterfeits seized. No arrests were made, but the criminal investigation is ongoing and a significant quantity of counterfeits is now off the market. The photo of the warehouse was published with the newspiece.
