If you go to Russia, be sure to know what you're drinking!
Police officials in Tyumen, south-west Russia, recently discovered a railway carriage carrying 26,710 litres of counterfeit alcohol. Most-heavily affected brands were Gold of the Slavs vodka (6,880 half-litre bottles) and Pshenichnaya vodka (42,580 bottles), the balance being 1,980 litres of other alcoholic beverages. All the bottles also bore fake excise labels.
Vodka is not the only target. According to recent estimates, 50% of wine and 70% of cognac on the Russian market is counterfeit; fake alcoholic products are blamed for the deaths of thousands of people each year.
