Sir Robin Jacob apologises for European trade mark law
Delivering his inaugural lecture last night as Sir Hugh Laddie Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Institute for Brand and Innovation Law, UCL, Sir Robin Jacob employed a cunning device for getting his message across. Since this lecture was also the annual lecture of the Bemtham Association, Sir Robin structured his lecture as an explanation to British philosopher and UCL co-founder Jeremy Bentham as to how intellectual property law had changed since the foundation of the college in 1826.

Sir Robin Jacob apologises for European trade mark law
Sir Robin's lecture was a wide-ranging and mainly positive review of all the major branches of intellectual property law. However, after discussing various trade mark issues, including the scope of protection accorded to trade marks and the vast number of trade mark cases that had ended up before the Court of Justice of the European Union and the General Court, he turned to the portrait of Jeremy Bentham that was projected on to a giant screen behind him and said: "And as for trade mark law, I can only apologise".
Class 46 looks forward to notifying readers once this lecture has been published.
