EU: Sangria remains Iberian

New rules approved last week by the EU Parliament on aromatized wines provide guidance for the use of the word "Sangría", which describes a wine originated only in Spain or Portugal. The rules, which were passed by a sizeable majority of Member States, seek to retain the status quo as per Regulation (EEC) No 1601/1991, protecting the word "Sangria"  from being used by other countries as sales denomination. Thus, where the drink is manufactured in a Member State other than Spain or Portugal, the word "Sangria" may be used in addition to the sales denomination "aromatised wine-based drink", which must be accompanied by the words "produced in …" followed by the name of the Member State of production or of a more restricted region. The new rules also secured the same treatment of the word "Clarea" for the wine produced in Spain consisting on a white wine spiced with honey, sugar and other aromatized supplements.
