Monte Carlo Conference farewell-a very tasteful GI workshop
All the MARQUES attendees have now left Monte Carlo, but here’s one last post on one of the workshops called a Journey of gastronomical fusion in the Mediterranean -which ended with a tasting of local GI’s from the South of France .
The GI team first presented the very complex and linguistically confusing legislative background ( ie: GI's, Appellations of origin- DOP in Spain or AOC in France, PDO's , PDI's, etc) which varies according to the jurisdictions.
Then, it covered the importance for brand owners to avoid conflicts with GI’s and to include GI's searches in your trademark clearance (see links of databases on GI team MARQUES website). It also highlighted how brand owners can work with GI’s to enhance their brands and create opportunities (for example, supermarkets which sell "white labels" products under the supermarket brand can cooperate with protected GI's to inform consumers and benefit from the association). Many practical cases were mentioned including Queso Manchego, Champagne, Café de Colombia, and Prosek.
So remember GI's have been part of the EU Commission's agenda from 2003 and 2768 GI’s have been registered in the EU member states from 2005 to 2010, stay tuned on MARQUES website to find out the latest ones!
