Madrid System use soared in 2021
There were over 73,000 international trade mark filings in 2021, a rise of 14.4% compared to the previous year. This was the fastest growth since 2005.
According to data published by WIPO, applicants from the US again filed the largest number of applications with 13,276 (up 32.5%) followed by Germany (8,799, up 18%), China (5,272), France (4,888, up 30.7%) and the UK (4,215).
Other countries with notable growth in the number of applications were Canada (49.4%), Norway (49.8%), Finland (43.2%) and Sweden (42.5%).
The biggest filers was L’Oréal (171 applications) followed by ADP Gauselmann (120), Glaxo Group (110), Huawei Technologies (98) and Novartis (94).
Class 9 was the most popular class for applications, accounting for 10.7% of the total, followed by class 35 (8.4%) and class 42 (7.7%).
WIPO also published data on the PCT and Hague System. PCT applications grew by 0.9% to a record number of 277,500. The number of designs in international applications made through the Hague System grew by 20.8% to 22,480 – the fastest growth since 2010 and a rebound after a decline in 2020.
