Round two of ICANN's new gTLD Program moves closer
On 12 December, ICANN published an Operational Design Assessment report proposing two options for the launch of round two of its new gTLD program.
At over 400 pages, it is a weighty read, featuring estimates of the human, financial and technical resources required for a successful program.
Option 1 proposes a five-year development process with an astonishing $457m price tag before a single application window opens.
Option 2, which is much preferred by many in the community, features 18 months of development and then repeated cycles of applications every four years. An estimate by the ICANN Finance Team that application fees could be over $250k – higher than in round one which produced a surplus – was challenged in two webinars as there was little supporting data.
It is a key milestone. We anticipate the ICANN Board formally giving the green light to round two in quarter 1 of 2023. The MARQUES Cyberspace Team continue to track and report progress.
