Not dead, just alive elsewhere ...
This week's BrandChannel features an article, "Reviving Weak and Dead Brands: Insights from Theory and Practice", by Sunil Thomas, Ph.D. and Chiranjeev Kohli, Ph.D. This piece starts with the striking sentence:
"Over the years, many brands such as Oldsmobile, PanAm, and Woolworth have met untimely deaths".In the parochial context of the US market, perhaps -- but if the authors cast their eyes across the Atlantic Ocean to a far-off place called Europe, they might like to contemplate the position of WOOLWORTH. Woolworth GmbH has a billion euro business in Austria and Germany, with some 340 outlets. In the UK, Woolworths still enjoys substantial business, both at high street level and online. Beyond Europe there are also Woolworth Stores in seven regions of South Africa; the brand is believed to be alive and kicking in Australia, New Zealand and even Mexico.
