Germany: "Commerzbank, die Beraterbank" (?)
It was in the news today that Germany's Commerzbank has agreed to buy Dresdner Bank from Allianz in a deal worth 9.8bn Euros.
News reports suggest that the brand "Dresdner Bank" will soon vanish altogether and Dresdner Bank's well-known tagline "Dresdner Bank, Die Beraterbank" (the adviser bank) will in future be used in conjunction with the Commerzbank brand: "Commerzbank, die Beraterbank". Head of Commerzbank, Martin Blessing, who started his career at Dresdner Bank, is quoted as saying that he felt emotionally attached to the well-known tagline because he had invented himself when he was working at Dresdner Bank. Blessing is also quoted as saying that marketing for the new bank would be more powerful than before and it would make little sense to retain both brand trade marks.
