More GIs protected in Europe
Published this morning on the Official Journal of the European Union website, Commission Regulation 98/2009 of 2 February 2009 entering certain names in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Aceite de La Alcarria (PDO), Radicchio di Verona (PGI), Zafferano di Sardegna (PDO), Huîtres Marennes Oléron (PGI)) simultaneously confirms the grant of protection to the four items of produce that are listed in its title.
Left: Huîtres Marennes Oléron
Disappointingly, the document published in the Official Journal still does not provide any hyperlink to the approved specification of any produce that has been accorded Protected Geographical Indication or Protected Designation of Origin status. Such a hyperlink would be of great assistance to any trader or consumer who needed to identify the characteristics that inhere in any PGI or PDO product, which in turn would make it easier to police the market for more honest trading.
