RCD filings rise to record level
There were 32,610 RCD applications in 2021, covering over 100,000 designs, according to recently published EUIPO data.
The number of applications grew by 5% compared to 2020, with the average number of designs per application being 3.1 (continuing a downward trend – in 2015 the number was 3.81).
The statistics can be viewed on EUIPO’s website.
The number of international design applications received by EUIPO increased slightly to 4,367 compared to 4,266 in 2020, although the number of international designs dropped from 16,109 to 14,588.
The data reveals that almost 40% of RCD filings were made using fast track e-filing.
The most popular class code for RCDs in 2021 was 06, followed by 02, 14, 26 and 09.
Chinese applicants led the way in the number of designs filed, with 24,488, followed by Germany, Italy, the United States and France.
